Nightpress

Support

Write to support@outworldapps.com. We answer within five working days. Please never send us your Recovery Card, PIN or pages: we don't need them, and we can't open your diary.

If you're struggling

Nightpress is a diary, not a crisis service. If you are thinking about harming yourself, or you are in danger, please contact someone now.

Getting started

What is a "night"? A night ends at 04:00 by default, so a page written at 00:41 on Monday belongs to Sunday night. You can move this between 00:00 and 06:00 in Settings.

Pressing. Write a line, pick an ink, then hold the press bar. After 30 presses the hold gets shorter; after 100 it's a tap.

Returns. From your eighth night, pages from a week, a month and a year ago come back after you press tonight's. Before pressing, hold the slots to open them early. Everything is always in the Drawer.

Heavy nights. Heavy and Stormy pages come back under a cover by default: only the ink and date show until you hold to lift it. Change this in Settings → Heavy nights, or keep inks, tags or months from coming back with Not now.

Locks

Standard lock uses Face ID, fingerprint or your phone passcode. Anyone who knows your phone passcode can open Nightpress too.

Private PIN (6+ digits) is the only way in besides your Recovery Card; your phone passcode can't open it. After five wrong tries Nightpress waits 30 seconds, then 1, 5 and 15 minutes. It never wipes your diary.

Forgot your PIN? Tap "Forgot your PIN? Use your Recovery Card" on the lock screen, type the card's code and choose a new PIN. Without the card, a forgotten Private PIN cannot be recovered by anyone.

Archives and restoring

  1. Keep it safe (offered on night 7, or in Archive): make your Recovery Card, optionally set an archive passphrase, and choose a folder. Nightpress writes the first archive and checks it.
  2. "Checked at save time" means Nightpress reopened the saved file where it lives, decrypted every part, matched every file and counted your pages. It cannot tell whether your cloud app has finished uploading it.
  3. A weekly archive runs the first time you open Nightpress after 7 days, once tonight's page is pressed. The previous good archive is replaced only after the new one checks out.
  4. Save a copy to… works with any location your phone offers, including cloud drives that can't be chosen as a folder.
  5. Restore: Archive → Restore from an archive, pick the file, then enter its passphrase or your Recovery Card. The archive is checked completely first; your current pages are moved aside, not deleted.

New phone, "Your diary is here but locked". Your pages arrived through a phone backup or transfer, but the key stayed on the old phone. Use your Recovery Card, or restore from an archive.

iPhone ↔ Android. The same .nightpress archive restores on either. Nightpress Bindery must be bought again on the other store.

Exports

Settings → Export makes a plain PDF (Latin, Greek and Cyrillic scripts) or an open ZIP with one Markdown file per page, a JSON file and your photos. Exports are not encrypted. Pages tagged #private can be left out.

Nightpress Bindery

A single non-consumable purchase, priced in your local currency by your store. It adds archive history, up to 12 photos per page, custom inks, the mark studio and three paper stocks. Use Settings → Restore purchases after reinstalling or on a new phone with the same store account. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google Play; after a refund is processed, Bindery items go back to their free limits, and nothing you made is deleted.

Reminders

One reminder a night at the time you choose, never showing what you wrote. After seven quiet nights it becomes a single Sunday note. Turn it off in Settings.

The archive format

A .nightpress file starts with NPARCH01 and a JSON header (format version, creation time, a key fingerprint and the Archive Key wrapped by your Recovery Card and, if set, your passphrase with Argon2id). The rest is AES-256-GCM in 64 KiB chunks whose final chunk is flagged, so truncation is detected. Inside are a manifest with the SHA-256 of every file, your encrypted pages and photos, and your key file. A free Nightpress will always open any archive it made.
